Press Release » 2009 WORLD STANDARDS DAY

Date Posted: 12th November, 2009 Source:

The Ghana Standards Board wishes to inform the general public of the celebration of World Standards Day which falls on 14th October. World Standards Day is celebrated on this day every year to draw attention to the significance and role of standards in global trade, production of goods and services as well as socio-economic development in general.

The theme for this year is: “Tackling climate change through standards”. This theme is particularly relevant and timely in view of the threat of global warming and its effects on almost all ecosystems, economy and developmental efforts, which is due the heightened concentration of greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere.

Increasing human activity like bush burning, reckless destruction of forests and the use of energy gadgets that are not friendly to the environment have resulted in increasing greenhouse gas emissions which have raised the earth\'s average temperature to bring about disastrous impact on climate change.
In a report published in 2007, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) cited standards as a means of mitigating climate change now while offering the potential to reduce its effects on the planet. These standards offer practical tools for addressing climate change at four levels:

  1. monitoring climate change;
  2.  quantifying greenhouse gas emissions and communicating on environmental impact;
  3.   promoting good practice in environmental management and design; and
  4. opening world market for energy-efficient technologies.

In view of the fact that a dramatic climate change would have enormous developmental, economic, social and environmental stresses on our planet, Ghana Standards Board wishes to appeal to all and sundry to avoid activities that are detrimental to sustainable development and preservation of the environment.
The Board, therefore, wishes to appeal to everyone to actively join in the celebration of this year’s World Standards Day by taking steps to preserve the environment and also pay attention to effective energy management because of its potential to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

We need to be conscious of the environment and not   engage in any activities detrimental to our safety, existence and growth.
